Values: Safety, competency, Community

We offer an alternative association, through which referees can gain exposure to different rules, be supported in new ways, and be prioritized in the volleyball world.

PLEASE follow us on Facebook, that is where 95% of our content is being published right now.

If you are not a certified and actively refereeing volleyball lover who would like to learn more about becoming a UCVA referee, or if you would like to learn more about our certified Level 1 (Clinic) Facilitator program, please fill out this form. We aim to have a competent level 1 program ready to go by fall 2025.

The biggest focuses for 2025 will be the following:
- Assigning BOTR and the ACE Invitational Tournaments from March-May
- Creating the policies and procedures that will govern how the refereeing function is set up
- Creating the structure under which the work will be carried out

Other Referee Updates:
- A referee subcommittee is being formed, and they will meet every month to advise and assist in the creation of our programs. Around half of this group are teachers by profession (which will enable our level 1 program to be created with teaching best practices in mind), some referee multiple sports and are administratively involved in those sports, and all are passionate about bringing about a new vision under the UCVA banner.

We are excited to announce the launch of our new UCVA Referee Store dedicated to all things refereeing gear!

UCVA is proud to build the only store in Canada where volleyball referees can procure all their equipment needs from one source.

REFEREE PRICING

We are thrilled to release our new refereeing pricing structure. Created by the VP of Referees, reviewed by around 15 pairs of eyes, and made by referees, for referees.

To Summarize:
  • The pay rate to referees increases in every context
  • The bill rate to organizations decreases in almost every context (if you have only Level 3's+ ref your tournament you'll pay more than market rates)
  • The margin difference between what a referee is paid and what the match is billed for is gone. What is billed for the match rate goes directly to the ref
  • The Admin fee is now 10%
  • Each referee will have a different level of pay per badge level AND per age group. If the expectation of competency is higher at U18 than U14, then the level of service quality, and therefore cost, will also be higher
  • Referees in training (RIT's) completing their practical evaluation will receive 50% of the fees a level 1 receives. In the current market they receive $0
  • Referee Supervisors are required on all tournaments that have 3+ courts at one facility. The remainder of the referees will be supported by a Referee Help Hotline set up to access a supervisor's guidance quickly
  • Mileage is a hot topic with referees, and there will be be a single policy applied, to all trips made, whether someone lives in the city or rural area
  • A travel fee on longer trips will be paid to driver and passengers
  • Read up for more!

REFEREE Re-Certification Program

There are many referees that have fallen out of 'active' status if they have historically not paid registration fees every year, regardless of how much they have actually refereed during those years of active status.

There are also many referees that due to the busyness of life are a little rusty and would like to jump back into refereeing.

We don't really care who you've paid registration fees to, and when. We care about your competency and knowledge as a referee.

There is NO separate referee registration process for those wanting a refresher and have fallen out of status. There WILL be a separate referee registration process for people that have not been certified as a referee.

Our registration process for referees include questions about how recently you have worked. We reserve the discretionary right to decide the badge level UCVA will recognize, based on your recency and quantity of work, and all referees wear the same badge anyway. We ultimately care the most about getting you working again as a competent referee, and back into the sport we all love so much!

We will provide a shortened process for these professionals to jump back in:

Using the Full House Program tournaments in April & May in Calgary we will provide Referee Supervisors to work with you for a handful (or a few handful's) of matches. The quantity will depend on your rustiness  level and the discretion of the supervisor.

Please see our Referee Pricing Sheet - Referee in Training section above for the pay rates of this process.
